District Committee:
We are proud to announce that all 5 of our district committee candidates won their primary!
The District Committee is a body whose major function is to decide which candidates at the district level receive the endorsement of the democratic party. In our district, people typically don't run for this office, and if no one runs, the representative may select and appoint their own district committee without an election. There is no code of ethics for this board, and representatives often select themselves and their friends and family. Many in our district decided that we need a more democratic process for this endorsement process, and 5 candidates have stepped up to run for this office to transform it from a rubber stamp from the representatives friends and family, to a real democratic process.
The 2021 District 71 District Committee has pledged to stand up for the democratic values, and a fair democratic process.
As promised, after being elected both to State Rep and District Committee, Michelle McGaw resigned from her District Committee seat so as not to put herself in a position to endorse herself. The District committee unanimously voted to appoint Juan Carlos Payero to the seat. Payero is a member of the Portsmouth School Committee and the Portsmouth Democratic Town committee and is a strong advocate for our communities and for good governance.
